After losing his sight in a terrible accident, only to learn that the woman he was planning to marry did not love him enough to accept him, Damien Falconer was devastated. Struggling to cope with his disability, he isolated himself from society, allowing no one to get close to him, but his personal assistant, Jake. Upon learning Jake was soon to leave his employ and return to Scotland, Damien was forced to advertise for his replacement.
Among the applicants who answered his ad was Lisa Andrews, a registered nurse from Connecticut. But Damien was adamant that he would not be replacing Jake with a woman. His argument was, he did not feel comfortable with a woman doing the things that Jake did for him, but one whiff of Lisa’s unique scent and Damien found himself fighting a blistering physical attraction the likes of which he’d never known before. Should he hire her or should he ignore what his “other” senses were screaming at him, about this woman. Damien rustled with the question for several days, but in the end, he caved. And so began a hunger for a woman he couldn’t see...could only recognize by her unique scent...yet wanted like he’d never wanted anything before.

I would consider this book to be a hybrid romance/erotica. To me, true erotica focuses on the sexual act itself and has little substance beyond. There's definitely a plot here - a relationship behind the relations.

Damien lost his sight in a freak accident about two years ago. Lisa is hired to help him with some of his daily needs. An attraction develops between the two almost from the instant they meet. But there are obstacles to overcome: the employer/employee relationship in addition to the fact that Damien is unable to believe that a woman would ever want to be with him in his handicapped state. Based on that conflict, I expected a more intriguing read, but it just fell flat for me.

First off, while I understand how Damien's life was forever changed by his blindness, I grew tired of his woe is me song and dance. For someone who is supposedly a shrewd businessman, I would have expected him to have overcome the adversity a little more. Depression has its place, but so does rising to the occasion and not letting things beyond your control utterly defeat you. In two years' time, I would have liked to have seen him come to terms with his disability and not have it define him. I was also baffled by his sometime use of a wheelchair. With blindness being his only long-term effect from the accident, how does that help?

Lisa was likable enough, a woman with a good sense of morality. She comes into the story also hesitant to trust because of a situation with a former co-worker. Suffice it to say, she's not big on mixing work with pleasure either.

But the attraction proves too much for either of them to handle and here we are introduced to the steamy scenes in the book. They are descriptive, but not as graphic as some I've read. The biggest impression that they left on me was that they were cliched. We have the virgin, the man who is always ready to go, the horrible yet tantalizing pain. It's always blissfully wonderful and she's like a drug and he's an addict.

I could have forgiven the less than original descriptions of the extracurricular activities if the plotline had stepped up and been more solid. But here, too, I found a rushed relationship with a forced conflict that didn't really amount to anything in the end. There was also a lot of repetition. I found myself paging back at times to confirm that, yes, this very thing was just discussed.

Did I like this story overall? Yes, but I was expecting so much more.

The Odor of Violet edition by Ju Ephraime Romance eBooks Reviews

Odor of Violet is an intense and passionate novel. The author has a very flowing writing style. Each paragraph blends seamlessly into the next. The book starts right after Damien's accident. There is enough back story to understand what is going on and the lack of unnecessary details makes it easy to jump right in. The story is told in short paragraphs, which makes it very easy to read.

Damien is blinded in an accident and is devastated when his fiancee leaves him because of it. Depressed and disabled, Damien isolates himself from everyone except his personal assistant Jake. A problem arises when Jake wants to return to Scotland. and Damien must find a suitable replacement. Damien is extremely uncomfortable with the idea of replacing his close friend with an unfamiliar woman. In fact, he had been adamant about the fact that he did not want a woman helping him with such intimate tasks as bathing and dressing. He gives a young woman an interview as a courtesy, fully intending to disregard her application. Once he meets her, however, he is intoxicated. He smells her violet perfume, which just happens to be his favorite flower, and can't get her out of his head. Damien tries to tune out Lisa's voice, but finds himself enthralled. Try as he might, he can't shake his feelings for her and agrees to take her on.

From there, things get intense. Lisa handles Damiens' vulnerability with care and sensitivity. She takes care not to make him feel weak and to help him regain his independence. She is a perfect fit, and Damien is able to completely put his trust in her.

This is a very erotic book, but it's not just about sex. The main characters have incredible chemistry, and their scenes are romantic as well as erotic. The writing during the sex scenes is poetic, and although the steamy writing starts early, the author takes time to develop the relationship between the characters. There is a story being told as well, and the author does an excellent job of making you care about the characters as people. This makes the story feel more real and adds depth to the novel. Ju Ephraime really makes the scenes build on each other. The result is a rising of passion, culminating in a crescendo of ecstasy. While reading Odor of Violet, you will never feel inundated with sex scene after sex scene. Instead, you will find your self drawn in, unable to help yourself from feeling immersed in the romance and unable to put the book down.

Odor of Violet is steamy and at times explicit, but it is never dirty or tasteless. All the scenes are well written, and you will have a hard time putting the book down. The love that Lisa and Damien share is all-consuming, and you will be enthralled and engrossed. The romance starts off strong and only gets stronger and stronger. The writing is a perfect balance of steamy and touching. This book will touch your heart, and I guarantee you will not be able to read it without feeling something. I recommend this book to anyone looking for a romantic read. As long as you don't have a problem with erotic fiction and explicit writing, you will enjoy Odor of Violet. Give it a try - you won't be disappointed!
“The Odor of Violet” is not your usual knight in shining armor romance. When Damien went blind, he lost more than just his vision. Without the support of his fiancé at his side, he spent years learning to cope with his new disability until a nurse, Lisa, and her magical scent enters his life and opens a door that had been closed for so long. The tension between the two forms the basis of the story as the reader is pulled right along with them. Although this is a story with many explicit scenes that might not appeal to some readers, “The Odor of Violet” is a true romance with its ups and downs between two injured souls who find love where they least expect it. Those who read the romance genre, will find this to be a highly enjoyable read.
In my case, art imitates life. The reason I picked up this title was because of my sight impairment. I used to fly in the military, and drove on the Autobahn at 120 MPH cruising speed. I had 20/15 vision, and could almost see into the future ) Then later in life, when I had a family, and career, I had a disease called Retonopathy. I lost my career, and family. I never thought I would regain affection.
Damien was in the same boat as I was, but instead of sight impairment, he was sight absent. He found someone who cared for him despite that, and that is the epitome of true love. This story is fictional, but it can happen in real life. It took about 4 years, but I found a compassionate soul that loves me despite my affliction. Ju got it right.
